LYTHE HILL HOTEL, HASLEMERE
By Rosanna Saunders, Haslemere

I recently dined at Lythe Hill Hotel Restaurant in Haslemere. What great service and fine quality food! Staff were attentive, but not overly fussy like they can be in some restaurants. Each course was beautifully presented and delicious. I had butternut squash soup, followed by roast goose and my dessert was an upmarket banoffee pie with salt caramel ice cream. The manager was warm and welcoming. Nice little touches included a tasty amuse-bouche, a jug of iced water appearing on our table without us having to ask and warm homemade bread rolls with quality butter. I will definitely return.

THE FOX AND HOUNDS, ENGLEFIELD GREEN
By Janine Green, Egham

We stopped by the Fox and Hounds after hacking around the beautiful Windsor Great Park. As regular riders it was great to make the most of the unseasonably warm weather and tether our horses while we sat outside. This could become an all too regular occurrence (hopefully) this summer! I opted for the Beer battered haddock, triple cooked chips & tartare sauce while my partner chose the Honey roast ham, triple cooked chips, fried duck egg & homemade piccalilli – for £12.95 and £10.95, we felt these both offered fantastic value for what we received. Washed down with a cheeky glass of Champagne – well one does have to enjoy life’s little pleasures – we quickly set about organising our next riding date!

WOTTON HATCH, WOTTON
By Felicity Hetherington, Dorking

I guarantee you won’t see a better sunset anywhere in Surrey than the one you get from the Wotton Hatch pub. The food’s not bad either! While the location would be made perfect with the passing A25’s replacement by a river, the road isn’t anywhere near as intrusive as you might imagine. This hot spring, watching a blood red sun set across the neighbouring fields was a real treat. Combine it with a glass of fizz and a baked camembert and I was in heaven. The fish pie with cod, smoked haddock, king prawns, applewood mash and crispy pangrattato made me long again for that river, and the chocolate brownies were pure indulgence. Excellent.

THE CANBURY ARMS, KINGSTON
By John Whittingham, Staines

Tucked away in north Kingston between the River Thames and Richmond Park, The Canbury Arms proved a real gem of a find. Not only was the food excellent but they also had Hogs Back, Surrey Hills and Twickenham Ale beers on tap, which was a highlight (not that I tried them all!). We both opted for the Original Canbury Burger with Smoked Bacon, Cheddar Cheese and Homemade Chips, which at 10.95 proved great value and not your average burger. Really tasty stuff in a relaxed setting. We will certainly be making the journey back, next time we are in the area for a fuller meal as the menu looks great.

THE BLACK SWAN, OCKHAM
by Florence Johnson, Oxted

I first read about the Black Swan in Ockham while reading January’s Surrey Life magazine and I’m so glad we decided not just to read about it! We visited after an afternoon at the nearby RHS Wisley on a day when the pub had been visited by a certain Nick Clegg. My husband’s eyes lit up at the Surrey Hills Brewery beer on tap and seemed equally excited by the new offering from Tillingbourne Brewery, which he explained had just moved into a place in Shere. Further local support was on offer on the wine list, where Denbies' rose and sparkling was to be found – I opted for a Spanish rioja, but please don’t judge me for that. The pub is an expansive place in the middle of nowhere and other than your recommendation, we weren’t really sure what to expect. It turned out to be game fortnight, with all the meat sourced from a local farm in Send – we followed the stag marked dishes on the special menu and found each to be equally stunning. There more ‘normal’ servings appeared to be equally appealing. It was perhaps a touch on the expensive side but we really had no complaints about the quality or amounts and I guess it’s one of those occasions where ‘you get what you pay for’. We’ll be back.

THE KING WILLIAM IV, WEST HORSLEY
by Stephen Westcott

As a family group we chose the King 'Billy' as a central location for a family gathering timed between Xmas and the New Year. This is the fifth year we have returned!

Always accommodating our late changes to numbers and menu choice, Kate, Mark and their staff, are welcoming and ready to please.

The pub has a several cosy corners with a welcoming log fire, with the eating area away from the drinkers at the back of the inn. Children are welcome and there is even a pile of toys and books to keep them amused.

A good choice of beers and wines back up an excellent menu.

THE BARLEY MOW, WEST HORSLEY
by Su Johnston, West Horsley

Things started badly – of only seven tables (24 covers) ours was between the main entrance and the kitchen swing door: a poor position. The gentle efficiency of the smiling waitresses soon calmed me and the menu was more than enough to make up for it. Our starters, Prawn Siam and Thai Dim Sum were tasty, light and beautifully fresh. My wheat-intolerant husband chose chicken satay and I opted for sweet and sour chicken (comfort food) to follow. Delicious! Portions were just right – we could have eaten, but did not need more! Food and a nice bottle Chardonnay came to just under £50. We left, replete, plotting our return.

CAMBIO AT THE CASTLE, GUILDFORD
by Sue Gunnee

Despite the historic location, this is an Italian restaurant offering a modern setting and a fine dining menu – no pizza or Spaghetti Bolognese here! We visited on a Friday night and although not full, the diners were all sat in the same area of the restaurant which maintained a livelier atmosphere.

The starters were excellent, a beef carpaccio that melted in the mouth and the seafood timballo was packed with meaty pieces of crayfish (however some bread or toast would have finished it off perfectly). We were also treated to some tasty amuse bouche from the chef – a nice touch in any restaurant.  The main courses were a little disappointing, although the sea bass was excellent, the special of lemon sole was a little watery and the promised “Mediterranean vegetables” were just asparagus. But the meal was rounded off with a chocolate fondant for desert that couldn’t be faulted.

The young staff provided excellent service, a good balance between attentive and unobtrusive. Although we did find the dress code a little confusing, while we were in “business casual”, the waitress was in jeans.

All in all a great meal which with one or two small changes could be really excellent.

THE SPOTTED COW, FARNHAM
by Nicci Shepherd

Tucked away on the south-side of Farnham, the Spotted Cow is a stone's throw from Frensham Common or Bourne Woods. Run by the current owners for the last five years, the lunch menu offers a host of options from their popular burgers and lighter bites, through to the full roast! Dogs are welcome, as are children, and with a large garden and playground, separate from adult drinkers seeking peace and quiet, it's ideal if you need to keep little ones busy until the food arrives. I was impressed by the roast beef and my fellow diners really loved their roast belly pork with calvados sauce, but for me the star of the show was the sticky toffee pudding. If you visit the Spotted Cow please do try to leave room for a dessert!

BAR CENTRO, GUILDFORD
by Sophie Grant

This family run restaurant just up from the castle in the centre of Guildford is seriously underrated.  From afar, this place is nothing special, a no frills Italian restaurant, serving lovely fresh pizza and pasta, with a wide variety of starters that will not disappoint. The service is friendly, the prices reasonable and most importantly, the wine list sports a good choice of wines for you to choose from. I would recommend the calamari to start, which is always on the specials board, the Favorita pizza is a delight, with a tomato and mozzarella base, topped with fresh rocket and Parma ham, and the affogato is a lovely Italian dessert to end with. This restaurant deserves some local support; it’s a real gem and a lovely place to be, any night of the week.

JULY 2011

HOME COTTAGE, REDHILL
by Fiona Salvage

It is a truth universally acknowledged that any pub with striking distance of a train station will not be a glamorous, well decorated, inviting establishment that serves fantastic food. Until now. It was with some trepidation mixed with optimistic hope that I saw the sign outside the Home Cottage saying it was newly reopened. Him indoors went on ahead for a reccie and when I got a text instructing me to “Come in and have a look. You won’t believe it” instead of just pick him up to go home, my expectations grew. And I wasn’t disappointed! If you’d been there before, you won’t recognise it now. It’s like an eight-page Homes & Gardens feature on how to do-up a pub. Stripy velvet furnishings, plump cushions, candles, painted quotes on the walls and a beautiful wood bar top. It was such a lovely environment and the menu looked so good, we decided to stay for food – we hadn’t planned to. We sat in the pub area, rather than the formal dining area as they were fully booked, but it was a proper table and comfy all the same. As a vegetarian I went for the summer greens risotto with mascarpone and pine nuts – summer greens consisted of broad beans, asparagus, French beans, rocket, peas. Delicious. Perfectly cooked rice, plenty of butter, just the right amount (lots). Him indoors went for the Chicken ballotine stuffed with pancetta and onions served with sautéed potatoes and garlic green beans and cleared his plate (and tried some risotto too). The kitchen was very busy and there was a 40-minute wait for food, but this estimation was bang on – we didn’t wait a minute more. We even managed to catch a glimpse of one of the sharing dishes – the eight hour braised ham hock glazed with honey – which looked very impressive. We couldn’t manage a dessert, but we’re definitely coming back and when we do I’ll make sure to leave room. And judging by the number of people who were in there with us on a Tuesday night, we’re not the only ones to have discovered the Home Cottage’s delights.

ZIO'S, WALTON-ON-THAMES
by Sinead Fitzgibbon

Something of an institution in Walton-on-Thames, Zio's Italian was established in 1979 and this family-run restaurant has been providing Walton residents with authentic Italian cuisine for over 30 years. I discovered Zio’s not long after moving to Walton from London, and from the first visit, I was hooked!  The food is simple Italian fare, and invariably delicious (the garlic bread is to die for!), while the wine list boasts a nice selection of good, mainly Italian, wines. Everything about this restaurant feels genuinely Italian, not least the temperamental 70-something Sicilian waiter who is often heard scolding his younger co-workers in rapid-fire Italian for even the smallest oversight. And therein lies the secret for its success … the customer always leaves this gem of a restaurant with the vague sense that they have discovered a little corner of Italy, right in the heart of Surrey.

THE GLASSHOUSE, KEW
by Robert Anderson

This is a buzzing, almost cacophonous restaurant, where many staff swirl around before coming to take your order. My starter of salmon ravioli was slightly disappointing as it came as a single ravioli without any sauce, with only a small dollop of pesto on top. My main course of guinea fowl breast was tasty with nicely browned skin, but the accompanying potato lattice and broad beans left me hungry. Hope the sweet is filling. I couldn't resist the Valrhona chocolate dessert, which looked and tasted the part except for peanuts and the obvious taste of salt in the terrine.

THE WINDMILL, EWHURST
By James Knighton

The view. Oh, the view. It's the kind of view that forces you to settle yourself deep into the cushioned seats on the outdoor terrace with a pint in your hand. But before I waste all my words talking about the eyes can see, you may be interested in the small point of a certain Mr Eric Clapton living next door. The food's not half bad either. We visited for lunch, which proved to be very, very good value. When I could wrestle my attention away from looking across the hills my pork belly cooked Thai style on a bed of noodles was sumptuous (possibly a touch overcooked but at £12 for two courses, not to the extent that worries overly) and the apple strudel to follow was to die for. With a full belly, a cool pint in my head and the location, I'd have been happy to go too!

EL MESON DE LOS HERMANOS, WEYBRIDGE
By Rachael Talibart

For twelve years now, we have been regularly enjoying El Meson de Los Hermanos in Baker Street, Weybridge. We like the tapas menu, which has a wide selection of very fresh and tasty dishes. One of our friends usually orders from their equally good al la carte menu. The wine list contains some real gems; we particularly like the muga blanco. Tapas is an informal meal for sharing and the atmosphere is appropriately cosy and friendly. Although Weybridge has many restaurants, El Meson remains one of its most popular so remember to book ahead, especially if you want a weekend!

THE WESTERLY, REIGATE (since closed)
by Florence Johnson, Oxted

As you enter the blink and you miss it The Westerly in Reigate, it becomes immediately obvious why it has garnered so much praise over the years. When I visited recently, the service was pleasant (according to friends, this isn’t necessarily always the case). Wine was offered and the red that we picked delicious, but not bank breaking. I went for the Bayonne Ham, Celeriac and Apple Remoulade, followed by Confit of Duck, Roast Magret, Braised Red Cabbage, Garlic Roasties: both were stunning, although I would have preferred a slightly larger portion. At this point, I noticed that most of their vegetables are grown at Secrett’s Farm and the meat supplied by Robert and Edwards, across the road. I read about the restaurant via a Surrey Life blog and I’m pleased I gave it a go, rather than listen to friends that had obviously visited on an off day. Intrigued to hear what others think.

KHYBER TANDOORI RESTAURANT, KINGSWOOD
by Ann Dobson, Epsom

For a delicious Indian meal we have been choosing the Khyber in Kingswood for years and it never fails to please. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, the décor is light and bright and the menu includes lamb laziz - juicy chunks of lamb with fiery ginger, green peppers and tomatoes - or tender pieces of delicately flavoured chicken tikka. The king prawn jalfrezi is wonderfully hot and spicy, with just enough sauce to coat the succulent prawns. Plenty of pilau rice helps to soak up those lovely juices, all washed down by a chilled glass of Cobra lager.

THE DOLPHIN, BETCHWORTH
by Nicola Macdonald

We often enjoy a drink at the Dolphin in Betchworth so I was looking forward to trying their restaurant since the extension has been completed. The new dining area is where the original kitchen used to be, but you’d never have guessed. The wooden beams (tall people beware!), fire and furnishings provide a cosy and welcoming atmosphere. We were equally welcomed by the friendly staff. The menu is varied and includes something to tempt everyone; sensibly priced too. It was British Pie Week so I chose the chicken, ham and leek pie, which was delicious. We’ll definitely be returning!

FIELD TO FORK, EPSOM
by Danny Walter

I chanced upon Field to Fork - a new restaurant that calls itself a ‘British Brasserie & Bar’. I was intrigued. On entering, we were taken aback by the smiling and confident bar tender who ushered me over to the bar. On finding out we weren't actually booked for dinner, he tried his best to get us to stay by offering us a look at their drinks menu. A short read later and a hedgerow sling cocktail and pint of local lager were ordered. The place looks great, the service is refreshing and the bar offering was definitely more Central London than Epsom. We were taken to a table in the back, already pretty full it was noisy but nothing off-putting. I had a burger (the best I have eaten) and my girlfriend had the duck. A chocolate fudge pudding with pistachio ice cream followed, which was also fantastic. I would definitely go back and have recommended it to friends at the office all week.

STAG ON THE RIVER, EASHING
by Beverley Ames-Rooks, Woking

Really impressed with the refurbishment at the Stag on the River at Eashing. They have put some super outdoor decking in and made the inside very inviting with open fires, which have been alight every time I have been in so far. The menu is lovely and based on fresh seasonal produce, the venison is yummy and seems well priced. I’m not a beer drinker myself, but hubby was impressed with the selection of beer they had. All in all, it’s a lovely pub and to top it off they allow dogs in which is rare these days!

THE BLUE ANCHOR, TADWORTH
By Tony Hill, West Norwood

Well worth visiting, we spent a lazy Sunday lunchtime here. It is ideally located with a great outside area at the front and back for pre drinks or to catch a few rays of sun. There is great parking available also. Inside the bar/restaurant, this place has been cleverly revamped and had a charming refit to include a large area to have drinks, roaring log fires or to sit at the bar. The restaurant tables are well placed and the service is second to none. A well thought out menu with many choices available together with some usual dished. I highly recommend the beef that was well cooked with unusual vegetables and washed down with a fine red wine. A really pleasant lunch had by all.

THE SEAHORSE, SHALFORD
by Felicity Butcher, Shalford

Wellington boots, scarf and gloves at the ready I stepped out into the deep snow. Just a fifteen minute walk from Guildford lies The Seahorse, a haven from the bitter weather with a log fire, a wide selection of wines and ales and an interesting yet unpretentious menu brimming with home-cooked delights.

After a drink at the bar, we went through to the restaurant which offers relaxed seating in a friendly and inviting setting. To get the taste-buds going and to give us time to choose from the tantalising menu, we opted to share the home-made rustic bread selection which is served with a whole baked garlic, olive oil and balsamic vinegar – hearty, simplistic and incredibly tasty.

I decided on the calves liver for my main course, served with vegetable dauphinoise, smoked bacon & balsamic onion jus. The plate arrived beautifully presented and piping hot. The liver was cooked perfectly and the smoke bacon and balsamic jus was rich without being overpowering. The vegetable dauphinoise was a nice take on an old classic and complimented the liver beautifully. The only slight criticism I have about the dish was the watercress salad which was dressed in a little too much olive oil for my liking.

THE MILL HOUSE,  SALFORDS
by Maureen Scaife, Horley

This Beefeater Grill had the intimate atmosphere of an American speak-easy.  Booths supported etched-glass screens and lights hung low over tables.

Staff greeted us warmly, attentive to our needs. The wine list was extensive and our Villa Maria Sauvignon well presented.

My partner described his chargrilled chicken breast and maple pork ribs as “lovely” and “succulent”.  I enjoyed my chargrilled salmon fillet in its tomato, basil and caper sauce, but found the “tenderstem” broccoli hard.

Desserts were mouth-watering and we happily indulged in treacle sponge and caramel apple crumble.

We shall return to seek further excitement for our taste buds!

LA LANTERNA, REIGATE
by Claire Smith, Reigate

Located in an inconspicuous part of the beautiful market town of Reigate, La Lanterna is a real gem. Guests are greeted like long lost friends by the owner.Ask him for a recommendation and he does not hesitate, showing true familiarity with both his food and wine menus. The portions are just right and the vegetables are always cooked to perfection and not saturated in butter, which I find all too common nowadays. I can thoroughly recommend the veal - stunning! Service is attentive but not intrusive.  The other pleasing factor is the final bill – always very reasonable!

THE DRUMMOND AT ALBURY
by Viv Onslow, Fetcham

Four of us went to the the Drummond at Albury for supper the other night and we were completely bowled over.  I had been recommended this place by my sister and we absolutely loved it.  I last went to the Dummond when I was 18 and sat by the river at the bottom of the garden in the summer.  It is just as picturesque today (20 odd years later - ouch!) as it was then.

We were completely charmed by the Landlord who looks after the pub for the Duke of Northumberland who owns it.  His customer service skills were just as you would want - attentive without being over-powering.

My twice baked goats cheese soufflé was divine and then I had the smoked fish and asparagus risotto for main.  The girls then shared something delicious and chocolatey while the boys had more wine.

All in all great food, very well priced and smashing service.

THE WIREMILL, LINGFIELD
by Florence Johnson, Oxted

Sat supping a Sauvignon in the late summer sun at Lingfield's award winning The Wiremill, I was swept into a James Bond movie as a speed boat set its sights on the balcony my friend and I had previously been relaxing on. DRAKE'S, RIPLEY
by Angela Marshall, Fetcham

My husband and I enjoy eating tasty, quality food that is well presented and beyond what we can cook. Our favourite restaurant is luckily on our doorstep - Drakes in Ripley.

Why? The ambience is relaxed, stylish and friendly with a lovely walled garden to sit out in the summer. The food is exceptional from the tasting menu to the set lunch. I particularly love the desserts which are light, tasty and divine. They have a great selection of wines, with a knowledgeable sommelier for advice to compliment the food as well as your budget.

THE SQUIRREL, HURTMORE
by Colin Jefferies, Ripley

How lucky we were to stumble across this idyllic country pub, and the wonderful sight of a hot air balloon launching from the back garden was remarkable to watch. Sitting in the patio area, we decided to share the salt & pepper squid for starters, perfectly crispy and a nice tang of black pepper were accompanied by chilli sauce. Then I had beef wellington, truly amazing and to the standard of a London restaurant. My wife decided on the seafood platter, an array of shellfish in garlic and white wine, was simply to die for! Too full up for desserts but will definately return as they looked gorgeous.

M.BRASSERIE & GRILL, MANDOLAY HOTEL, GUILDFORD
by Claire Dee, Pirbright

A stylish and contemporary setting perfect for an anniversary night out with my husband. The initial slow service improved but attention to detail was lacking. Our decent bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape wasn’t complemented with the large delicate red wine glasses you would expect, just standard 250ml labelled glasses from the bar!

Starters – Thai marinated tiger prawns and baked mini camembert – were good, but not really that good. Mains fared better with my husband completely clearing his herb crusted four bone lamb rack dish while I attempted to do the same with my ample linguine and ricotta pasta of the day. Eton mess and cheese and biscuits followed. Again good, but not really that good.

THE WILLIAM BRAY, SHERE
by Christine Purnell, Merstham

We were lucky enough to have lunch in this wonderful restaurant in Shere after we had completed a scenic walk in the area. My sister, daughter and myself were recommendedby the lady in the shop - the one that sells all the lovely candles/jewellery and clothes.

The three of us had been walking in the fields and must have looked a real mess but we were welcomed by the bar staff and had a drink at the bar first of all.  We were not really hungry so just ordered a few of the dishes to share, the prawn pint pot and some bread and special fries and a few different dips.  Absolutely delicious - we were lucky to have chosen a sunny day and sat outside in the garden.

What a magnificent place to eat - sadly we did not feel hungry enough to choose from the main dinner menu but we shall have to return one day - perhaps not looking quite so bedraddled, to sample further delights from this wonderful eating abode.

We are lucky enough to live near The Spring Tavern in Ewell. The inside has been delightfully decorated and the friendly atmosphere always gives such a warm welcome.
